I said YES in Oahu, Hawaii

On Monday December 9th 2019 we picked up our rental and headed to North Shore Oahu. This was about to become my favorite day in Hawaii. This post is not a suprise post by now all our family and friends know we are engaged but I wanted to share with you a little more on the details of that amazing day.

I was so stoked about getting a mini Cooper. The Island is full of Jeep rentals and we own a Jeep back home so I was so excited to get a fun little red convertible. Our day started late because we got to the rental place 30 minutes too late and had to wait in a big line. We rented our car from Alamo Rental car and it was so easy, not as cheap but convenient as it was walking distance to our hotel in Waikiki.

But First Acai

Our first stop was Hale’iwa Bowls where we stopped for Acai. The shop is tiny but so cute and the Acai was amazing and if you are heading to north shore this is the best spot to stop by.

Sunset Beach – North Shore

As we headed up we saw surfers parked on the side of the road on highway 83. Usually surfers go to secluded areas and that’s what we were in search off. Waikiki was full of crowded beaches but today we wanted to just experience a different Hawaii. Sunset Beach was exactly that. We couldn’t swim because the waves were too big (probably why there were surfers ha). Gabe got to fly his drone and I got to just relax and breath it all in.

We came across this spot with a crooked palm tree. If you are ever in Oahu and drive up to North Shore. For the exact address in google maps of the location click here.

The Sunrise Shack

I was not going to leave Hawaii without going to the Sunrise Shack. Gabe agreed to go and so we made it around noon when it was probably at its peak in terms of traffic. It was crowded and lighting was probably not the best but despite it all I was going to get my picture and I did. We had some bullet coffee and left after we took the picture. Its super cute and the menu is really big. I regret not staying longer to actually enjoy it but we were getting hungry and we wanted fresh Poke.

Food Truck Heaven

If you Keep driving up Highway 83 you will eventually get to Sharks Cove in Haleiwa, Hi. On the left side of the road there is a spot with dozens of food trucks parked serving food. There were so many options but we opted for Aji Limo Truck and we got our fresh Poke fix finally. It is Peruvian Japanese infusion and it was AMAZING. North Shore Shrimp Truck is another popular one and their lines wrapped around the parking lot. Parking is free so you can stop and eat and cross the street to see Sharks Cove which is perfect for snorkeling. If you decide to snorkel there is a grocery store called Foodlands a short walk away from the Food Trucks. Do not buy the $40 snorkel sold by the street shops. We got ours for $12

The Proposal

We were getting tired and I wanted to get sunset couple pictures like I do on all out trips. I told Gabe we can move it to tomorrow and head back to Waikiki to see the sunset. He insisted to do them on this day and I figured he wanted to get pictures out of the way so he could relax and not have to “work tomorrow”.

I had no idea this was coming to be completely honest. The above pictures are the ones we captured. I thought we were done with pictures but Gabe insisted in shooting the other direction (us facing the sunset so there would be more light on us and have less contrast on our pictures). I was tired but sure lets try this out.

It happened so quick and the tripod was on timer. It was just so magical the way he timed the sunset, the camera, the ring, the location. We had been there at that palm tree earlier in the day and he brought me right back because he knew how much I loved it. The owner of the house in front of the palm tree came out and congratulated us. That’s when it hit me. We are engaged! I felt so happy. We drove back to Waikiki beach with the mini copper top off, the Hawaiian playlist he had made and the fading sunset. It was the most perfect moment.

More on Oahu coming on part 2 of this blog. This next day was my 2nd favorite as we head to Lanikai Beach, Oahu.
